And Nature, the old nurse, took
the child upon her knee
saying, "Here is a story book
Thy Father has written thee."
--H. W. Longfellow

We took off around the neighborhood for two hours on an amazingly beautiful day this week. As we walked and talked, we kept an eye out for special sights. Besides the gorgeous trees showing off their colors, we found this interesting specimen:

We passed one yard with a dozen or so of these scattered about. They are about the size of softballs and had fallen from a tree. We googled it under "green fruit that looks like a brain" and discovered it is a hedge apple. We even found a poem, a kind of ode, to Texas hedge apples. I'll spare you the poem, but we certainly learned a bit about this odd fruit.

A very pleasant afternoon indeed!
